11 Biggest & Best Games Coming in 2017

Image of one of the best games coming in 2017

Last year was a great one for gamers, with the release of many amazing titles.

Luckily, 2017 looks like it may be even better.

We have taken a look at the biggest game titles coming in 2017.

This list will only include the biggest triple-A titles since indie/smaller titles deserve a separate list.

It is important to point out that this is just the triple-A games we look forward to the most, and different opinions and suggestions are more than welcome in the comment section.

11. South Park: The Fractured But Whole

We had an absolute blast with South Park: The Stick of Truth, however short it was. If they manage to capture the spirit of the TV show as well as the first game with the sequel, we are surely in for another hilarious RPG adventure. The developers have even promised that this game will include twice the amount of content as the first game, which only increases our hype.

Whereas the first game used the ‘Game of Thrones’ish theme from the series, the sequel uses the theme and story line from the super hero episodes. Such as Coon and Friends. You will again start out as ”the new guy” and you will have to create your own absurd superhero identity, in the hopes of joining ‘Coon and Friends'(which is undoubtedly the highest superhero honor).

It goes without saying that this a more of a niche game than most other games on the list. If you love the TV show, you will love the game, Vice Versa.

  • Genre: Role-playing game
  • Release Date: Between April 2017 and March 2018

10. Prey

In 90 seconds Bethesda managed to intrigue the entire audience and left them wanting for more with this amazing trailer at E3 in 2016. Not only does it set the scene for this sci-fi shooter, but it leaves so many unanswered questions, which leave us no choice but to pick this game up as soon as it releases.

The game is set in an alternate timeline, with one crucial difference to ours. In this reality, John F. Kennedy survives the assassination attempt in 1963, and during the rest of his presidency, he decides to invest much more money into the space program. This leads to a not too distant future with much better technology and knowledge in space travel etc. The game takes place on the space station Talos, which was created as a prison orbiting the earth’s moon, and later also used for scientific experiments.

We know one thing for sure, we cannot wait for the 5th of may, and to try this sci-fi fps/RPG adventure out.

9. Resident Evil 7: Biohazard

It is no secret that the love and regard of the Resident Evil franchise have been steadily declining in quality since the 3rd installment in the franchise. Mostly because the newer games went totally off-track from the franchise’s core roots, which is zombie survival horror, simple as that. However, Resident Evil 7 is said to return completely to the core premise of the franchise, as a truly terrifying survival ”zombie” horror game. Without all the alien aspects that had been added over the years.

For the first time in the franchise, there is a protagonist, Ethan Winters, who is not a skilled fighter and/or shooter. This is what makes the game so intriguing for us since the suspense and horror aspect of the game will be so much more intense with an untrained protagonist. That being said, you still get a fair amount of options to choose from in terms of weapons.

It is also the first Resident Evil and the first major triple-A horror game to be fully playable in virtual reality. Which sounds incredibly fun and horrific at the same time, but definitely won’t be for the weak of heart.

  • Platform: PS4 / Xbox One / Windows
  • Genre: First Person Survival Horror
  • Release Date: January 24th, 2017

8. For Honor

One of the most heavily advertised games of 2017 is Ubisoft’s ”For Honor”, which is an entirely new concept, and looks very interesting. You play as 1 of 3 nations, either the Vikings, medieval knights or samurai. The game is a mix of hack & slash, strategy, and action, and it is about waging war upon the other nations, where you take part in the sieges yourself and play as 1 of 3 protagonists, one for each nation. Where you run around in a third person action environment, leading the siege and your men.

It is sieging action on a scale we have rarely seen and done very beautifully. The fighting is a mix of hack and slash and strategic action, when you fight the regular soldiers it is pure hack and slash, but when you meet the stronger soldiers and leaders of the opposite nation, you fight with a very interesting block/parry/strike system, which is best explained through video.

However, as fun as the campaign looks, we will be picking this up for the multiplayer aspect. Where you play as 1 of many different characters and either match up against players in an arena styled 1v1, 2v2 or 4v4 match. Or you can go all in with the dominion game mode, which is basically all our war, with AI mobs and players.

We have one fear about this title, Ubisoft has had a TON of original gaming concepts over the last 15 years, and the first one in a new franchise is rarely very good and is always lacking something. Assassin’s Creed, Watch Dogs etc. Both examples of interesting new game ideas, with a flawed first installation. Not to say that Assassin’s Creed 1 were down right bad, it was just not by any means good compared to the second and third installation.

  • Platform: PS4 / Xbox One / Windows
  • Genre: Action, Hack & slash, strategic third person action game
  • Release Date: February 14th, 2017

7. Mass Effect: Andromeda

All aboard the hype train, we are going to a galaxy, far far away. BioWare is back with their brand new title in the Mass Effect series.

This game series should require no introductions at all, but for those who have been living under a rock for the past 10 years. Mass Effect: Andromeda is an action role-playing game, set in the future, the series is known and loved for its amazing story development.

This game will take place between the events of the second and third Mass Effect story. We are going on a journey to populate a galaxy in a program called the ‘Andromeda Initiative’, in order to ensure mankind’s survival.

The protagonist is either Scott or Sara Ryder(chose one), they are twins and inexperienced recruits, this game will only offer two playable characters, but don’t worry, Mass Effect: Andromeda will have better and more creative ways to build your character than ever before, you will be freer to choose your own path, combine that with open-world elements and exploration, I think it’s safe to say the hype is justified.

  • Platform: PS4 / Xbox One / Windows
  • Genre: Action role-playing game, third-person shooter
  • Release Date: March 21th(NA), March 23th(EU), 2017

6. Horizon Zero Dawn

From the first time we saw the E3 trailer of this post-apocalyptic world, filled with robotic dinosaurs and beautiful sceneries, we have been hyped for Horizon Zero Dawn. It looks to be one of the most innovative game titles coming in 2017, mixing the very primitive and prehistoric type world with the futuristic technology of a sci-fi.

In Horizon Zero Dawn you play as Eloy, an orphan tribe woman with a talent for bowmanship. Throughout the game, you will explore the beautiful and varied world, range from deserts, jungles, forests and wide open plains. As Eloy, you will attempt to discover the truth about this post-apocalyptic world, and try to figure out what we humans did to it for it to end like this.

On your way, you will fight robots that not only look like dinosaurs but also behave like them. The combat system looks incredible fun and varied as well, as you will fight everything from huge and slow robots to smaller and faster ones(and everything in between) as well as human enemies. The crafting system appears to be equally deep, and provide a survival game-like experience.

This game is Jurassic park, meet Tomb Raider, meet Farcry Primal, meet Ygritte from Game of Thrones. And we cannot wait!

  • Genre: Action role-playing game

5. Halo Wars 2

The Halo series is one of the most beloved and most epic IP in gaming history. So when a new Halo game is announced, be it RTS, FPS or something else entirely, the hype will be huge. It is no different with the latest RTS from the Halo franchise, Halo Wars 2.

Halo Wars 2 is obviously the sequel to the 2009 Halo Wars, which was critically acclaimed but struggled a bit with the actual player base.  Most likely because the real-time strategy is a hard genre to master, especially when focusing on console gaming. Which is initially what had me worried for this game, since I feared it would be another RTS with too much focus on the console version. Where a console is really not the best machine to experience an RTS game on. However, it has been announced that the new Halo Wars 2 will have a much stronger focus on the PC version, while still being available for Xbox One.

This creates the possibility for one of my favorite gaming genres to have a brilliant game, set in one of my favorite gaming franchises of all time.

  • Platform: Xbox One / Windows
  • Genre: Real-time strategy

4. Tom Clancy’s Ghost Recon: Wildlands

Tom Clancy’s Ghost Recon is a tactical shooter, with a focus on multiplayer gameplay. It is a GTA-style open-world third-person shooter game, with freedom of choice in the driver seat. The game can be completed in both a multiplayer and/or singleplayer mode, but it is clear that the developers have a huge focus multiplayer cooperation.

In Ghost Recon, you are taking on a cartel, but the rest is pretty much up to you. If you want to blow up every single enemy with a bomb, you are free to do so, if you want to sneak through the entire game, you can do that aswell. The objective is clear, but the means are up to you. This freedom of choice, mixed with the incredible looking multiplayer aspect is what makes Ghost Recon one of the most anticipated games of 2017. You can have 1 friend sitting with a sniper a mile away, while 1 is waiting in a getaway car and the 2 others sneak in to abduct the target. And in cooperation, you can try to pull off the perfect coup.

We cannot wait to pull off some perfectly timed, stealth operations with our friends.

  • Platform: PS4 / Xbox One / Windows
  • Genre: Tactical shooter
  • Release Date: March 7th, 2017

3. The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild

The Legend of Zelda series is one of the most beloved and revered franchises in the whole world of video gaming. The first Zelda game was released in 1986 and since then, more than 18 games have followed.

Like the previous games, The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild is an action-adventure game, with some RPG elements to boot. Here you control the protagonist Link in a world called Hyrule, a world in medieval fantasy setting. This time around there will be a bigger focus on an open-world environment, the world will be bigger than in any previous Zelda games. Their game will come in HD-resolution and with loads of voice acting, so we think it’s safe to say that Nintendo has thrown everything into this, we simply don’t see a way this game can disappoint.

We can’t wait to get our hands on this game, this old fan favorite put into the newest gaming technology will surely give new life to series.

  • Platform: Nintendo Switch / Wii U
  • Genre: Action adventure
  • Release Date: March 3th, 2017

2. God of War

Almost 7 years has passed since the last time the God of War Kratos took over our consoles, and he has been sorely missed. This amazing action-driven trilogy is among the most beloved PlayStation franchises of all time. It was believed to be the end with the third installment in the God of War series, some 7 years ago. With a natural conclusion, with the end fight between our protagonist Kratos and his father Zeus of the greek pantheon. But luckily we were mistaken.

Kratos is back, but with quite a twist. First of all, the new God of War is taking place in the north and has a focus on the Norse mythology and gods. Such as Thor, Odin, Freya and so on. Secondly, we see in the trailer that Kratos has fathered a son, which seem to be one of the main story driving elements in the game.

The game looks absolutely stunning, and if the story proves to be as intriguing as its predecessors, then we are in for a truly magical gaming experience.

  • Genre: Action adventure

1. Red Dead Redemption 2

The number 1 on this list can come as no big surprise to any gamer. The sequel to one of the best games in all of the 2000’s, Red Dead Redemption 2. Rockstar has once again proven that no other gaming company has the ability to create hype quite like them. The creators of the GTA franchise is the masters of open-world sandbox games, and never fail to deliver. Which is why Red Dead Redemption has already earned its place as the number 1 on this list. We have no doubt that this game will be absolutely incredible.

Almost nothing is known of the game, and yet it is still the most anticipated game of the year. This just goes to show the power of Rockstar as a gaming developer. All we know is that it is a sequel to Red Dead Redemption and that it will have both a singleplayer and multiplayer component. We don’t even know the name of our protagonist yet.

However, if the story campaign, the world, and the characters manage to be as compelling as in the first game, it could turn out to be one of the best games we have seen in many years.

  • Platform: PS4 / Xbox One
  • Genre: Action adventure
  • Release Date: Q3/Q4 2017
